<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>25 Mei…: </strong>Ulangtahun kelahiran ke 32 menantu perempuan “Happy birthday my D.I.L. @ Aqeen, and happy 4<sup>th</sup> wedding anniversary. <em>Quote “Count your life by smiles, not tears, count your age by friends, not years&#8230;”</em></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>25 Mei 2008:</strong> Menyambut menantu (kenduri).</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>25 Mei 2009:</strong> Setelah di ‘desak’ berulang-kali oleh anak yang menyediakan sebuah blog untuk bapanya ‘merapu’, dan untuknya menyingkap liku-liku kehidupan anggota RMN Woodlands, maka bermulalah <em>posting</em> pertama siri ‘Menyusur Denai Ingatan’ atau MDI yang masih belum kelihatan di mana noktahnya.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Berkat tunjuk ajar anak-anak, dan keinginan si bapa untuk belajar sesuatu yang baru, UPBB yang pada mulanya hanyalah sebuah blog yang <em>‘anonymous’</em>, kini Utuhpaloi.com boleh dilayari dengan hanya menaip di Google perkataan seperti KD Malaya, KD Rahmat, KD XYZ, Cdr Hydesmith, Wahid Anang…dan puluhan/ratusan lagi terma rujukan<em> search engines</em> (Terima kasih <em>‘master hacker’</em> yang menyambut ulangtahun ke empat perkahwinan hari ini atas tips dan tunjuk ajar cara mem-blog. <em>Quote “Count the years of wedded bliss by the frequency of soothing &#8216;music&#8217; from the tears and laughter of your children, and not by how many centimeters more that can be added to your waistline…”)</em></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>25 Mei 1978:</strong> Setelah 13 tahun bergelar anggota TLDM, aku memulangkan ‘rantai kaki’ ke MINDEF.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>25 Mei 1965:</strong> Aaahh, masih jelas terbayang hari itu…rentetan peristiwa yang membuatkan aku berada di situ – <em>Main Galley KD Malaya Woodlands</em> &#8211; mendengar ceramah ringkas dari POSM RP Wong yang aku (kami) mula kenali sehari sebelumnya.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ye, pagi sebelumnya &#8211; 24 Mei 1965.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Aneh, betapa pun aku cuba melupakan imej dan perasaanku pagi itu, namun ianya tak pernah pudar.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Hingga hari ini masih jelas terpahat dalam ingatan bagaimana perasaan seorang remaja desa yang terpinga-pinga ‘macam rusa masuk kampung’ turun dari trak 3 tan, berdiri di hadapan blok ‘B’ KD Malaya Woodlands menarik nafas lega sambil memerhati keadaan keliling, menikmati kebebasan seperti seorang banduan yang baru melarikan diri dari penjara.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Melarikan diri dari penjara!!!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Walaupun keputusan peperiksaan <em>Senior Cambridge</em> sudah lebih dua bulan berlalu, namun aku masih enggan bekerja sebagai orang pejabat di tempat kelahiran. Aku lebih suka membanting tulang empat kerat dari duduk dalam pejabat memegang pen dan kertas atau menconteng kapur di papan hitam dalam usaha menurunkan ilmu kepada murid-murid di bilik darjah.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Masa mengambil slip keputusan peperiksaan, dan masuk ke bilik Mr Thor Seng Aun, guru besar Secondary English School Kluang untuk meminta tandatangan <em>testimonial,</em> beliau meminta aku menyumbang bakti sebagai pendidik di sekolah tempat aku mula-mula belajar bertutur dan menulis dalam Bahasa Inggeris 6 tahun sebelum itu (dari Remove Class). Tapi aku menolak.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Ye, aku menolak. Pelik kan? Sedang orang lain berlumba-lumba untuk jadi guru, malah tidak kurang yang sanggup menggunakan pintu belakang, tapi aku…enggan menyambut si bulat yang datang bergolek, si pipih yang datang melayang. Tapi itulah hakikatnya – aku tak berminat samada untuk bekerja sebagai pendidik atau duduk di pejabat sebagai kerani.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Selang beberapa hari selepas itu, Ami Salleh kawan karib arwah bapaku yang sama-sama berhijrah dari Yemen &#8211; sebelum Jepun menakluki Malaya - datang ke rumah meminta aku hadir pada esok hari untuk mengisi kekosongan kerani di pejabat Local Council Air Hitam di mana dia adalah salah seorang dari councilor. Tawaran itu juga ku tolak.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Habis tu apa yang ku buat selam ini? Makan tidur !!!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Sejak berusia 5 tahun, sampailah hari terakhir berada di kampung, hidupku sudah sebati dengan kerja menoreh,  menebas, menebang pokok, mencangkul, menajak, meredah hutan dan apa saja kerja yang memerlukan kudrat tulang empat kerat. Sebab itulah, siapa yang mengenaliku dan <em>‘observant’</em> tentu dapat membezakan antara hujung jari (tirus) mereka yang tak pernah membuat kerja kasar dengan hujung jariku yang begitu selesa bila memegang hulu pisau getah, hulu parang/kapak, batang gergaji, cangkul dan tajak. Ye, hujung jariku sama besar dengan pangkal.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Kerana pendirianku yang enggan menerima tawaran sebagai guru atau bekerja di pejabat, aku selalu dimarahi ibu. Bila selalu dimarahi, rumah jadi macam penjara.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Setelah terbaca iklan pengambilan tentera laut, darat dan udara, aku pergi untuk temuduga secara senyap. Ketibaan waran tiket keretapi ke Johor Baru menimbulkan masalah &#8211; ibuku semakin marah.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><em>“Sudah dua minggu waran tiket keretapi ke Johor Baru diterima namun aku masih terpinga-pinga. Air liur hampir kering memujuk ibu memohon restu. Surat tawaran meminta tanda tangan waris atau ketua kampung masih belum terusik. Atas arahan ibu yang juga ibu saudaranya, ketua kampung enggan membantu.</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><em>Detiknya semakin hampir, fikiran kian buntu.”</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Detik-detik ‘suspens’ itu pernah ku ceritakan dalam<span style="color:#ff00ff;"><strong> <a href="http://utuhlingkun.com/2012/03/20/dari-tasik-kenangan-1/"><span style="color:#ff00ff;">‘Menyusur Denai Ingatan – prolog’</span></a></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Hari ini genap 47 tahun aku menurunkan cap jari (10) di atas borang perjanjian untuk berkhidmat dalam tentera laut yang pada masa itu lebih dikenali dengan panggilan Royal Malaysian Navy.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Hari ini juga genap 3 tahun aku menyorot dan menukil kehidupan sebagai anggota tentera laut RMN Woodlands.</p>

Yet in the hierarchy of modern marvels, the </strong><strong>ability to recover and launch aircraft from the deck of a moving ship stands out as </strong><strong>one of our signature accomplishments. Which just goes to show you: </strong><strong>Some tricks never grow old.</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Naval aviation was invented more than a hundred years ago, on January 18, 1911, when a 24 </strong><strong>year-old barnstormer pilot named Eugene B. Ely completed the world&#8217;s first successful </strong><strong>landing on a ship. </strong></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>It happened in San Francisco Bay, aboard the cruiser USS Pennsylvania, <strong>which had a temporary 133-foot wooden landing strip built above her afterdeck and gun </strong><strong>turret as part of the experiment.</strong></strong></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Ely accomplished his feat just eight years after the Wright Brothers made their first </strong><strong>flight at Kitty Hawk. His aircraft was rudimentary: a Curtiss Model D &#8220;Pusher&#8221; biplane, </strong><strong>equipped with a 60 hp V-8 engine that gave the aircraft a 50 mph airspeed. To get a </strong><strong>sense of how simple it was, behold a contemporary replica of Ely&#8217;s 1911 Curtiss Pusher </strong><strong>that was built to celebrate this 100th anniversary:</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>But back then, innovation was afoot. Ely&#8217;s Curtis Pusher had been fitted with a clever </strong><strong>new invention called a tailhook. The idea was to quickly halt the aircraft after landing </strong><strong>by using the tailhook to catch one or two of 22 rope lines. Each propped up a foot </strong><strong>above the deck and weighted by 50-pound sandbags tied to each end &#8212; Strung three </strong><strong>feet apart along the Pennsylvania &#8216;s temporary flight deck. Mark J. Denger of the  </strong><strong>California Center for Military History has written a tidy biography of Eugene Ely which</strong> <strong>narrates the historic day: <em>On the morn ing of January 18, 1911, Eugene Ely, in a </em></strong> <strong><em>Curtiss pusher biplane specially equipped with arresting hooks on its axle, took off from </em></strong> <strong><em>Selfridge Field (Tanforan Racetrack, in San Bruno, Calif.) and headed for the San </em></strong> <strong><em>Francisco Bay. After about 10 minutes flying North toward Goat Island </em></strong> <strong><em>(now Yerba Buena), Eugene spotted his target through the gray haze – </em></strong> <strong><em>the PENNSYLVANIA .</em></strong></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Ely&#8217;s plane was first sighted one-half mile from the PENNSYLVANIA&#8217;s bridge at an </strong><strong>altitude of 1,500 feet, cruising at a speed of approximately 60 mph. Now ten miles </strong><strong>out from Tanforan, he circled the several vessels of the Pacific Fleet at anchor in </strong><strong>San Francisco Bay. The aeroplane dipped to 400 feet as it passed directly over the </strong><strong>MARYLAND and, still dropping , flew over the WEST VIRGINIA &#8216;s bow at a height </strong><strong>of only 100 feet. With a crosswind of almost 15 knots, he flew past the cruiser and </strong><strong>then banked some 500 yards from the PENNSYLVANIA &#8216;s starboard quarter to set up </strong><strong>his landing approach. Ely now headed straight for the ship, cutting his engine when he </strong> <strong>was only 75 feet from the fantail, and allowed the wind to glide the aircraft onto the </strong> <strong>landing deck. At a speed of 40 mph Ely landed on the center line of the Pennsylvania&#8217;s </strong> <strong>deck at 11:01 a.m.</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>The forward momentum of his plane was quickly retarded by the ropes stretched </strong><strong>between the large movable Of sand that had been placed along the entire length of the </strong><strong>runway. As the plane landed, the hooks on the undercarriage caught the ropes exactly </strong><strong>as planned, which brought the plane to a complete stop. Once on board the PENNSYLVANIA, </strong><strong>sheer pandemonium brook loose as Ely was greeted with a bombardment of Cheers, boat horns  </strong><strong>and whistles, both aboard the PENNSYLVANIA and from the surrounding vessels.</strong></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong>Ely was immediately greeted by his wife, Mabel, who greeted him with an enthusiastic </strong><strong>&#8220;I knew you could do it,&#8221; and then by Captain Pond, Commanding Officer of the </strong><strong>PENNSYLVANIA. Then it was time for interviews and a few photographs for the </strong><strong>reporters. Everything had gone exactly as planned. Pond called it &#8220;the most important </strong><strong>landing of a bird since the dove flew back to Noah&#8217;s ark.&#8221; Pond would later report,  </strong><strong>&#8220;Nothing damaged, and not a bolt or brace startled, and Ely the coolest man on board.&#8221; </strong><strong>(NOTE: Safety first! While they dined, the landing </strong><strong>platform was cleared and the plane turned around in preparation for takeoff. Then the </strong><strong>Ely&#8217;s, Pond and the others posed for photographs. 57 minutes later, he made a perfect </strong><strong>take-off from the platform, returning to Selfridge Field at the Tanforan racetrack </strong><strong>where another tremendous ovation awaited him.</strong></p>

But Ely didn&#8217;t live to witness the milestone; he died just a </strong><strong>few months after his historic flight, on October 11, 1911, when he was thrown from </strong><strong>his aircraft during a crash at an air show. But 100 years ago, he merged the power of </strong><strong>naval warships and aviation in ways that remain cutting-edge, even today.</strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><span style="color:#0000ff;">Special Escort Duties.  </span> </strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">KD Panah is Patrolling Sarawak waters and we decide to take our Break in Sibu.  So early in the morning we begin our passage up the Rejang River.  We arrive there as scheduled and secure alongside the Base Jetty.  <strong>It is early August 1973.</strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The Routine duties are seen to and soon all not on Duty are ashore.  There is lots of sleep for me to catch up with so I take it easy.  Then the R.O. comes with a Signal and it’s from ComNav East instructing me to sail at first light for Labuan and to Report to him upon arrival!!!!!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The first thing that came to my mind was “Now, what have I done?  Am I in trouble?&#8221;  Well, no use contemplating.  I will find out when I get there and cross that bridge then.  So the crew are instructed and at first light we depart Sibu and make tracks for Labuan.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">I am instructed to berth near the Dockyard and on arrival note that there is a Staff car standing by for me.  ‘Oh Oh !!!’  This looks very serious!  So as soon as we are secured, I get into the Staff car and am taken to Sri Labuan.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">KD Sri Labuan &#8211; It brings back fond memories for I was once the XO of the base prior to my appointment as CO of KD Sri Sabah.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">On arrival, I go straight to ComNav’s Office.  There I am briefed.  The Chief Minister of Sabah, Tun Mustapha was about to proceed on his ‘meet the people’ Tour but now it was to the Island villages and the remote Towns.  It would commence from Kota Kinabalu and round the top end to Kudat and the Islands off there all the way down to Sandakan.  Then to Darvel Bay to Tunku Point, Lahat Datu and Kunak.  Semporna is next then Tawau.  Then on return to other villages along the route to Kudat and then to Beaufort and Labuan.  This ‘mission’ would end when they return to K.K.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">ComNav briefs me that at that time, due to some unfortunate incidents between our Patrol Crafts and some Ministers of the Sabah Government, the relations between the Government and the Navy was at rock bottom.  Be aware of this and take every opportunity to repair this relationship.  I think “What am I getting myself into?”.  He further advised that the Tun would be on board a spanking brand new Marine Police Boat – PX 26.  Another Marine Police Boat would also be escorting them.  However, Ah Ha!!!, this is where we come into the equation.  The Police Boats have little ‘fire power’ should they encounter any ‘trouble’, and so the RMN had been requested to supply a Ship just in case.  They know what our Guns are capable of.  For the duration to this Tour (sort of Special Operations), KD Panah will be on Escort Duties and off Patrol Duties.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">‘Oh! Patrick, brief the crew; he likes being given salutes and enjoys the Pomp and respect being shown him’.  “‘Nothing to lose’ by being smart and professional”.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">He advises that the Officer In Charge of the Marine Police in Sabah would be part of the entourage and he would be liaising with me closely.  He will meet you on your arrival at Kota Kinabalu.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Back on board, I ‘clear lower deck’ and brief the crew of the Task ahead and of what I expected of them which was also what ComNav and the Navy expected of us.  I reminded them how to behave when the Tun was near and that if spoken to, to show respect.  I wanted the Ship to always look smart and be neat and tidy.  This over, the X.O. and I have a long talk about us being given this Task.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">We sail the next morning and get to K.K. shortly.  The A.S.P  is waiting for me on the Wharf and we hit it off from the start.  He is very friendly and co-operative. He tells me that his brother-in-law is one of our Naval Officers!!!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">We ensure that we will be able to communicate from ship to ship on a agreed frequency and he gives me the Program.  It can be changed, he warns.  Next, he invites me to have a look at this new Police Boat PX 26.  It is opulent for the standards of that period.  Rolls Royce engines fitted.  The Forward section has been fitted out as a luxurious  VVIP Cabin, with all modern mod cons. It cost some Twenty-seven million Ringgit (RM 27,000,000).  Very impressive but is it a Marine Police Boat or is it going to be a ‘Yacht’ for private use??????  I don’t ask the question.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The Tour commences as scheduled and we put on a show whenever we were called on.  Tun is showing some fondness for the Navy.  All the way to Tawau and back to the west coast and Labuan.  There I brief ComNav on the progress to date.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">After Labuan, we sail for K.K. and we are beginning to relax a little.  However over the Radio, I am informed that Tun would like to do a spot of Fishing in the vicinity of Pulau Mangalum. I had earlier been briefed on Tun’s style of ‘Fishing’.  The boat would stop and anchor at whichever ‘spot’ he selects. His fishing line is handed to him all baited.  The line is dropped into the sea.  After a few minutes, if he has not felt any bites, the line is taken in, the anchor recovered and off they go to another location.  And, he has practically just TWO (2) speeds.  FAST and STOP!!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">So we all alter course for the island.  It is now evening and for safety’s sake, we proceed to conduct a survey of the waters around the island.  All is clear.  No other boats in the area and nothing suspicious. However, we spot a Floating Log in the area.  We plot its position and pass this information to the Police Boats.  We then anchor some distance away keeping a lookout.  Of course, we too take the opportunity to try our luck communicating with the fishes.  We are quite successful.  We also note that PX 26 has now moved about 3 to 4 times.  Again over the Radio we remind them of the Floating Log.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Suddenly, we see lots of lights switched on, on PX 26.  The A.S.P.  comes quickly on the air and advises that &#8212; YES – they did hit that floating log!!!.  They were taking in water and the Tun and his wife was transferred to the other Police Boat who would take them to K.K.  They were then going to BEACH the boat.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">I instruct him to hold on as we had since weighed anchor and we would come and assess the situation and offer all assistance.  I order the X.O. to get the Damage Control equipment ready and soon we are alongside.  We quickly check the damage.  Their Forward Mess on the starboard side section had been hit by the log causing a hole and splintered its surrounds.  The Captain is seen sitting there starring at the scene and in a daze.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The area concerned was just below the waterline and they were taking in water.  Fortunately, they had started a pump to pump out their bilge.  Our boys soon have the ‘mat’ over the hole on the outside thus reducing the intake of water. It is secured in place.  Damage Control is put to good effect and the damage area ‘shored up’ effectively.  We stopped the intake of water.  On inspecting I am very pleased and so is the A.S.P.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">On the other Police Boat, our work is being closely watched although nothing is said.  I advise the A.S.P. to send the other Police Boat with the V.I.P’s back to K.K. and that we would closely escort PX 26 into Harbour.  This is agreed, and soon we are all secured safely in the harbour. I advise the A.S.P. on the importance of Training his men on Damage Control practices and suggest that they liaise with the RMN to train their men.  I also strongly advise that he arrange that every Police Boat carry some Damage Control items – shock mats, assorted wedges, pieces of rubber mats etc.  This would cost ‘nothing’ but were so very important.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">I can safely say that following this whole episode – the ‘Tour escort Duties’ and cumulating with the above incident, the RMN flag was now flying high in Sabah and this was later confirmed by ComNav.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><span style="color:#0000ff;"><em>In closing, I am sure that</em> <em>there must be many other stories of PATROLS and of the Role played by the Patrol Crafts in particular throughout these very formative years of the Expansion and growth of the RMN.  The Patrol Crafts did play a major part.  Small and Fast and very maneuverable, they packed a punch and were given respect by others. They conducted the bulk of the Patrols. </em></span></strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><em><span style="color:#0000ff;">It is hoped that these Snippets will help all those surviving Sailors from that era to recall their very own particular stories on Patrols.  Those that they had played a large part in.  It is hoped that they will in turn share them with the present generation of Sailors and the Rakyat at large. </span> </em></strong></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong><strong>Patrols on the East Coast &#8211; West Malaysia.</strong></strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Our Patrols here were different as here we were subjected to the weather of the South China Sea. Here we encounter the Thai Trawlers who had been fishing in our waters. Apart from this their Trawls caused plenty of damage to our Fishermen’s Drift Nets. What made these Patrols dangerous was that the Thai Trawlers were strongly built and they did not hesitate Ramming our Patrol Craft. They could inflict quite some damage too.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">How does one combat such tactics?</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Well, a number of C.O.’s decided that the only way to show who was Boss was to use our Guns. So, a Round or Two across their Bows worked wonders and soon the Message got across and they stayed within their waters. We then also had an R.N.O. stationed at Songkhla and the relations with the Thai Navy helped us when on Patrol.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">During this period, we would also anchor off Pulau Perhentian for some shelter should the weather turn bad. Hearts and Minds was also put into service when required. Further south Pulau Redang was a good anchorage for shelter in bad weather. These islands including Pulau Tioman further south and the other smaller Islands were all practically uninhabited. When we anchored off them, we enjoyed the whole island to ourselves. No tourist or resorts.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">I am advised that these days there are many Resorts catering for Tourist on these Islands. Progress!!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The same can also be said of the many Islands off Sabah. We experienced them as pristine and un-touched Islands.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">It should be stated that at this time, there were very few Ports where we could go in to for our Off Days. Kuala Trengganu required careful Navigating especially after the Monsoon season. The Sand banks at the mouth of the river shifted after severe storms. Similarly was Kuantan, but with caution, they did give us another arrow to our quiver. A change of scenery and these Ports also offered some crew members that hailed from these areas a chance to take a short break and visit their families. These little changes did wonders for the Morale on Board.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><span style="color:#0000ff;"><strong>How about the Langkawi Islands?</strong></span></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">These waters were also frequented by the Thai Trawlers and needed our presence for some time. It was not too stressful and it did give us the chance then of moving around the islands and going into Kuah Town. There was no Jetty to go alongside so we anchored off when we wanted to take a short break. Then, it was pretty quiet – a sleepy hollow town . Patrols here however were popular because we would take our Rest Days in Penang. Enough said.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;"><strong><span style="color:#0000ff;">How about Patrols off Sarawak</span> </strong></p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">The inclusion of Patrols in this area increased the scope of our knowledge of Kuching and Sibu. Kuching in particular made us aware of the force of currents in rivers when on the ebb. You timed your arrival in to Kuching so that you arrived there when the River was slack – between tides. This gave us the chance to berth heading down river. Should you arrive at a time when the tide was on the ebb, you just went alongside into the tide. This was safe. Then the next day, as soon as the tide turned, you turned your ship around. Turning with the river flowing down was very dangerous.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Passage to Sibu, some 75 odd nautical miles up the Rejang River, gave us experience in River navigation. We learnt to detect the shallow banks and that here one also needed to mark off the turns and bends of the River as we pass. The other landmarks were the Longhouses along the river.</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">It is interesting to note that our visits to many of our local Ports both in East and West Malaysia had the effect of indirectly drawing youths of the Towns to be interested in joining the Navy. We now had on board a number of Sailors from Sabah and Sarawak. On Patrols, they played a big part with being able to speak in the local dialect. Information garnered from such Boardings would assist in later patrols.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Visiting K.D. Sri Rejang was interesting too. We had our own Jetty and the Staff were very helpful with repairs. The Base however was some distance from the Town. It was an eye opener for me though, seeing how the local folk living along the river coped with things. They all took their baths in the river and further up stream you could see out houses over the same river too. We should be Thankful for what we have on board.</p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Sebut <em>long weekend,</em> teringat masa di RMN Woodlands &#8211; kisah seorang kawan yang memunafaatkan <em>long weekend</em> sepenuhnya. Dari petang Jumaat menghilangkan diri, pagi Isnin baru nampak kelibat di Wisma Mutiara. Malam Isnin, jam 2100 dia dah <em>&#8216;pipe down&#8217;&#8230;recharge battery.</em></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;"><em>I was going through some old stuff and found this.  We had mentioned T.A.B. in the Postings.  This will help.  Of course, it is no more there to see.  The RMNVR Singapore then used Laburnum as their base.  The Godown there was used for Badminton by us.   The boats in the Basin were used to ferry the ‘Sew Sew’ girls out to the Merchant ships anchored in the Harbour.</em></p>

<p style="text-align:justify;">Admin teringat perbualan dengan pegawai yang pernah terlibat dalam pemilihan/pengagihan pegawai kadet: <em>Cream</em> atau yang terbaik diserap ke dalam TUDM/TLDM, yang selebihnya&#8230;..!!!!!</p>
<p style="text-align:justify;">Bersandarkan kata-kata pegawai tersebut, aku yakin tak seorang pun bekas anggota RMN/TLDM atau TUDM dalam kumpulan &#8216;tonggeng&#8217; di atas.</p>
